Happy Earth Day, everyone! This year marks the 50th anniversary of the movement, and the celebration is going digital. I'm celebrating at home and on social media, and it's been a welcome change of pace to see my news feeds filled with photos of nature and graphics that feature the environment.

Love the Boot Week
Monday, April 20, 2020
We have officially made it to Love the Boot Week! Spearheaded by Keep Louisiana Beautiful and kicking off today, the week is all about celebrating both the state of Louisiana and our environment.
A big part of Love the Boot Week involved cleanup and beautification events planned throughout the state. Following the state's stay-at-home orders and health guidelines, all physical events were canceled.
However, Keep Louisiana Beautiful is keeping the spirit of the week alive and has planned challenges and virtual activities to help everyone feel connected to one another and our communities.
There are many ways you can celebrate Love the Boot Week and Earth Day from the safety of your home and through social media - I share some of them in my column for the Times of Acadiana!
“Love the Boot Week is Louisiana’s unique way to engage all citizens to show love and respect for their home, city, parish and state,” said Casey Rudolph, development and communications manager for Keep Louisiana Beautiful.
The organization has shared their first challenge for the week on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: Share a photo of your favorite reusable drink bottle to spotlight the importance of reusable versus disposable bottles! Use the hashtag #LoveTheBoot to participate when you post.
There will be a new challenge each day, so follow Keep Louisiana Beautiful to find out what they are!
Since we've been home for the past month, using reusable bottles and cups has been extremely easy. We've been going for near-daily walks and bike rides, and I always make sure to bring a reusable bottle for both Ariana and me. We enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and I've picked up litter a few times as I'd come across it.
Last week, we joined a neighbor friend for a social distancing wine and walk. We stick to opposite sides of the road, but get to chat and fit in 30 minutes of exercise with our children. It's all fun and games until your toddler insists on standing up in a moving wagon!
CHEERS to a positive Monday and a great Earth Day this week! I hope you all stay safe and keep your head up.

Earth Day 2019
Monday, April 22, 2019
Happy Earth Day, everyone! I love the spirit and attention the environment gets today - it gets me even more hyped up and heart-eye-emoji for this cause.
April has been quite the whirlwind behind the scenes, but I am excited to have checked a few items off of my bucket list.

Photo Friday | Preparing for Earth Day
Friday, April 20, 2018
As with pretty much everything so far this year, Earth Day is still managing to sneak up on me!
For yet another weekend, the rain looks to put a damper on events, but I'm still looking forward to attending the annual Earth Day festival at Vermilionville to check out the booths and exhibits.

Earth Month Events Across Acadiana
Thursday, March 29, 2018
With all of the springtime events ramping up and Easter weekend just ahead of us, it's strange to think that Earth Month is only three days away. Of course it's one of my favorite times of year, between the environment-related events, decent Louisiana weather and abundance of things to do in the community.
Whether you live in South Louisiana or not, there are sure to be Earth Month events happening near you. Mark your calendar so you don't miss out on the fun!

Photo Friday | Earth Day
Friday, April 21, 2017
With tomorrow being Earth Day, I'm actually having a bit more trouble deciding on what to feature for today's Photo Friday. There are so many aspects of environmentalism and so many niches that I could easily share 30 photos to encompass the Earth Day spirit!
From litter cleanups to litter reduction and education, to zero-waste living, to sustainable and ethical style, to secondhand shopping, to energy efficiency and alternative power, to minimalism, to going off-grid, to nature preservation, to recycling, to repurposing, to upcycling...there are so many areas you can choose to focus on.
And as I always try to reiterate here on the blog, start with one and make some habit changes. Take small steps and get bigger as you go. I didn't get where I am today in a short amount of time. I'm still learning new habits and making changes at home.
But all of the greener habits make a difference. They matter. We're the Hustle Gang (HT to that littered clothing tag above for my new phrase!)
These two photos are from last Saturday's Earth Day Preamble, which you may have seen on my Instagram (and soon will see on Facebook!). Volunteers kicked off the event with a litter cleanup in Downtown Lafayette, which was expected to be fruitful the morning after a night out at bars.
My friends Simon, Skyra and I tackled a nearby parking lot that had a lot of litter strewn about, and we came across the above shrub. While it may look nice from this distance, it was actually chock full of liquor bottles, beer bottles, a plastic bag filled with unidentified objects, chip bags, Styrofoam cups and go cups. We sure had a hell of a time fishing items out from between the twisted branches, but we were determined! The three of us probably filled up almost two bags just from this one spot.
Earth Day is about celebrating Earth as the resource it is. Everything we have comes from this Earth, and everything on this Earth is not just for us, but for the generations that came before us and will come after us too. Let's respect and protect this one planet that we have! We don't get any do-overs.
How do you plan to celebrate Earth Day this weekend? I'm very much looking forward to a few local events - check out Eco Cajun on Facebook for a roundup everything happening around Louisiana. I'm especially looking forward to Bayou Vermilion District's Earth Day Festival on Sunday, where I can combine my treehugger and yogi sides with my friend Erin's first yoga class since becoming teacher certified in India!
And come back next week for my annual Guide to a Green Festival. Don't forget to visit yesterday's post on Sustainable Festival Style for your chance to win a bottle of Native Polish.

What's Happening in Louisiana for Earth Month 2017
Thursday, March 30, 2017
Although Earth Month hasn't officially started yet, I'm too excited to share with y'all the long list of events that are happening around Acadiana and Louisiana.
Click on each event to be directed to the official information source, and start making your Earth Month plans now!
The event's goal is to provide a space for earth lovers to congregate, learn about the work being done locally, and learn how to get involved.
From 10-11am, there will be a litter cleanup parade downtown, then from 11-3 the stalls behind the Biergarten will be filled with local environmental organizations that have both volunteer and membership opportunities.
Back in Lafayette, Bayou Vermilion District is hosting its annual Earth Day festival at Vermilionville from 10-4, with free admission, paddling, crafts, yoga, live music, and a free clothes and book swap (bring what you don't want and take home something new-to-you!)
Additionally, Bayou Vermilion District has organized a Bike to Earth Day Poker Run from 11-1. Register in advance using the link on the Facebook event; the fee is $10 per rider.

Photo Friday | HAPPY EARTH DAY!
Friday, April 22, 2016
The rain has moved out of the Acadiana area, and it's both Festival weekend and Earth Day!
Although I'm not wearing anything the color green, I am representing different eco-friendly alternatives by rocking a fair-trade cotton dress from Liz Alig, handmade necklace I purchased at Festival International last year, my great aunt's vintage pearl earrings, and a handmade in Haiti purse.
A reminder, if you are heading to Festival, check out my tips to reduce waste and be sustainable all weekend long. I'll be heading out there this weekend and following my own rules, of course! Gotta walk that walk.
At the beginning of April, I shared some tips on how you can celebrate Earth Month, like riding your bike, picking up litter, conserving water and choosing reusable containers. How have you done so far on greening your daily life?

Music for Earth Day
Thursday, April 21, 2016
Tomorrow is Treehugger Christmas, also known as Earth Day. It's a great time to practice your reduce, reuse, recycle skills, and just a fun day to appreciate our planet and our natural resources.
And why not celebrate to music? I've put together another little Spotify mix featuring some of my favorite artists and some well-known environmentally friendly musicians. Check it out below or follow me on Spotify (ecocajun, of course!)
Last week, as I was celebrating the 19th anniversary of my favorite band's first single (ahem), I got to thinking about how music has changed since 1997 (and long before that too). I used to buy CD singles for my favorite bands, and now I listen to the same song in my car via Bluetooth, streaming from my phone.
From vinyl to 8-tracks to cassettes to CDs to digital formats, the footprint has gradually shrunken. I will always love physical copies of my favorite music, but digital music has taken over in terms of saving space in your home or your car, and has cut down on physical materials needed in production. The trade off is in the increase of power consumption, from keeping your devices charged to the servers that store files (and backups of backups).
Jack Johnson is one of the most well-known eco-friendly musicians, and the album below was recorded in his solar powered studio in Hawaii. He's also a member of 1% For the Planet, an organization dedicated to giving back to the environment through business sales.
The Meiko CD was "pre-loved", so I gave it a second life!

Celebrating Earth Day Around Louisiana
Tuesday, April 12, 2016
Even though Earth Day is still 10 days away, many organizations across Louisiana are gearing up for Earth Day festivals starting this weekend. These are great times to round up friends or the children and enjoy the outdoors (weather permitting) while learning about the environment.
If you attend any Earth Day events, remember to be a good steward of the planet - bring a reusable drink bottle, a cloth napkin (especially if you plan to eat), share one map or program with your whole group, and don't leave any trash behind!
Lafayette Middle's Environmental Sciences Academy is hosting their annual festival this coming Saturday. There will be plenty of activities for children and music by Curley Taylor.
UL Lafayette's Office of Sustainability is hosting week chock-full of events, starting with a guided Bayou Vermilion paddle on Saturday morning. Other events include a debris installation, e-waste collection, bike day, and an expo on Earth Day itself.
Make your plans and celebrate Earth Day with your family and friends at one of these festivals!
Did I miss any events happening in Louisiana? Drop me a line and let me know!

Earth Day | A Photo Essay
Wednesday, April 22, 2015
Happy Earth Day, y'all! While so many treehuggers joke that "every day is Earth Day", it's fun to have a day to just celebrate our planet and all it does for us.
Today, I'll share some photos from my Earth Month so far instead of babbling on for way too long.

Soooo...
How have you been doing on your Earth Month pledges? I've shown y'all a few new ways to be a little greener, and I've been sharing photos on Instagram. Posting new pictures each day is certainly one way to reinforce the idea of daily little green moment!
I've got on my favorite Dirty Coast shirt and I am ready to celebrate! No styrofoam, no unnecessary trash, and recycling everything that isn't reusable. And, chances are, you can find me neurotically picking up litter I cross paths with. I just can't help it!
Have you been keeping up with the EPA's daily Act on Climate tips? Are there any you already practice, or ones that you'd like to start doing? These are easy ways to make a difference in your household and car! Read more about each on the Act on Climate EPA page.
This year, I decided to make you guys a little Earth Day present, because I love y'all just that much, and I now present to you the Eco Cajun Earth Day Spotify mix! 30 songs, spanning 2 hours. From nature imagery to environmental messages, I think this mix covers the spectrum pretty well.
Hope you enjoy the mix, and I hope this Earth Day treats you well!

celebrating earth month
Thursday, April 17, 2014
This past Sunday was Vermilionville's annual Earth Day Festival, and this year the weather held up just long enough!
We walked around, ate a small lunch, listened to some of the band playing, visited with the Acadiana Permaculture Guild and went for another canoe ride around the swamp.
Some of the exhibits featured the Vermilionville garden, plants from the Permaculture Guild, cooking demos, tables for the Teche Project, Palmetto Island State Park (a great little campground just 30 minutes south of Lafayette!), Lafayette Master Gardeners, Trees Acadiana, and others. There was also a scavenger hunt for children, which unfortunately I did not participate in.
There were talks given all afternoon about Bayou Vermilion recreation, the LA Trail hiking and biking networks, the recreation portion of the Lafayette Comprehensive Plan, and the vision and design for Lafayette Central Park.
The canoe ride was again my favorite part of the festival, though it was not without its moments. I was not exactly ready to paddle against some strong winds, and I'm not exactly a cool cucumber in quick moments. Oar form got a little lost in a moment of panic and I sprayed water all over my boyfriend in the back of the canoe. OOPS! We just went for a longer ride to help him dry off! Sorry, babe! When we were paddling back toward the bank, one of the volunteers let us know that there was a baby alligator just under the water very nearby. Nature! (I didn't look too hard for him because I was too busy paddling quickly back to the bank.)
I always enjoy doing something a little different, and I love spending time in local cultural spots, but I wish that there were more Earth Day in this Earth Day festival. A celebration of Acadian culture and nature is always great, but I would have enjoyed to learn a little bit more about environmentalism amongst it all. In 2010, there were tables set up for green organizations, solar companies and other related groups to share information. I would love for Lafayette to have an Earth Day festival that focuses more on alternative electricity sources, locally grown food (with some available to eat, instead of soggy french fries in a paper basket or jambalaya in a styrofoam bowl!), sustainable practices, and alternative transportation.
Maybe next year I can get a table for Eco Cajun and get that going myself! Hmm…
Elsewhere in the land, the UL Office of Sustainability is having their Earth Week celebration this week, doing everything from cleaning up campus and storm drains, to putting up a plastic bottle display, to hosting Fete de la Terre in a few short hours. If you're on or near campus today between 11:00 and 2:30, swing by the corner of Hebrard and St. Mary to join in the festivities! Best part…you can ride the St. Mary bike lane to get there!
On Sunday, April 27, Baton Rouge is hosting the Louisiana Earth Day Festival downtown. We went last year and it was a fantastic afternoon with lots of people, exhibits and sunshine. This year, however, it's happening on the last day of Festival International, so the chances of driving to Baton Rouge are about 10% to 0%! Sorry, Earth Day, but this is Festival International we're talking about. But, if you are considering a trip to Baton Rouge, I highly recommend this festival.
We're getting closer to Earth Day!

From the Acadiana Permaculture Guild, we picked up some peppermint and parsley to add to the herb garden. The girls with the Guild were very friendly and explained to us how to best grow our herbs. Out front there were free trees for the taking, so we may have Googled each tree to see what it will look like in the future before we selected a gorgeous red maple for the backyard. Fall color, here we come!

Sorry, Earth Day, but this is Festival International we're talking about. But, if you are considering a trip to Baton Rouge, I highly recommend this festival.
We're getting closer to Earth Day!
local event notice! vermilionville earth day, april 13
Friday, April 11, 2014
Vermilionville's annual Earth Day celebration is happening this Sunday, April 13, from 10:30-4. If you're in the area, make it a point to stop in and learn about Acadian culture and green living at the same time! The schedule of events is over on Vermilionville's website, so you can plan your trip around what you're most interested in!
There will be craft and activity tables for children, cooking demonstrations, canoe rides (EXTREMELY FUN!), live bands and a lecture series about outdoor recreation on the Bayou Vermilion.
You can read my recap of last year's rainy Vermilionville Earth Day. I'm hopeful that the weather will hold out this year and all exhibitors should actually be there.
louisiana earth day festival

Happy Earth Day to y'all! I hope you're thinking just a bit greener than normal today. Don't forget to show the Earth you love it, and hug a tree!
Yesterday was a great day to celebrate Earth Day over in downtown Baton Rouge at the Louisiana Earth Day Festival. The weather was much better than last weekend, and the festival was much bigger than Lafayette's. There were a few stages for bands, and the festival spanned a few blocks in the North Boulevard Town Square. There were also tons of exhibitors and activities going on. I enjoyed the area set off for children's activities and education. Teaching children about recycling and conservation is such an important step, so they can grow up practicing good habits and teaching others to be mindful.
Beside each trashcan was a convenient recycling bin, provided by the Recycling Foundation.
We learned that many of the state vehicles are powered by natural gas. There were a few on display at the festival that had been converted from conventional fuel to natural gas.
My first time seeing an all-electric vehicle in person. Oh, how I wished they were giving this Nissan LEAF away...to me! I also didn't know that some of the car's components are made with recycled water bottles.
Winn Dixie gave out reusable goody bags (with disposable single-serve bags of snacks...), and had this display about the debate between paper and plastic bags. The best answer is always reusable!
Bike Baton Rouge offered free bicycle valet parking...and if we didn't live an hour away, biking would've been an option! But I love that this is becoming a common thing at festivals and other events around here. Bike Lafayette offers a bike corral at downtown gatherings, and I believe possibly for Festival International this coming weekend.
One exhibit I really liked was from the Department of Public Works. They showed the difference between an incandescent and energy-efficient traffic light. On top of the displayed cost savings, I could feel the difference between each: the incandescent light gave off MUCH more heat than the energy-efficient one. So much money and energy is wasted with incandescent lights simply because they give off so much heat.
A handy way to remember your cloth bags when you go shopping!
The Recycling Foundation was one exhibitor, along with supplying the recycling bins throughout the park. Their company is based in Baton Rouge, and they service residents and businesses in Lafayette as well.
We sat in the grass for a bit and listened to the Mulligan Brothers and enjoyed the sun (wearing sunscreen, so we wouldn't burn...again.) I brought along my trusty reusable water bottle, and I got to see an actual bass made from suitcases. The festival overall was great and crowded, and makes me wish that Lafayette's festival can grow to be as large.
I hope y'all make the most of the rest of Earth Day, and that the spirit of Earth Day will carry over to other days as well. Every little bit of conservation, recycling and respect counts, but continued actions make a world of difference.

Today's link is also kind of a last-minute notice of another Earth Day event in Lafayette. If you're near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Campus, stop by between 9am and 1pm today for their annual Earth Day celebration, Fete de la Terre.
The fun is happening on the corner of St. Mary and Hebrard, near Broussard Hall, and is put on by UL Lafayette's Office of Sustainability, in conjunction with the School of Geosciences and the Institute for Coastal Ecology and Engineering. The theme of this year's celebration is "Green Education - Green Jobs."
Get more information over on UL's website, and stop by if you can!
And if you're in the Baton Rouge area, don't forget about the Louisiana Earth Day festival happening this Sunday!

vermilionville earth day festival
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
This past Sunday was the annual Earth Day festival at Vermilionville, put on by Bayou Vermilion District. While the festival itself was held despite pouring rains the night before and morning of, many of the exhibitors canceled on attending, so what was left was more of a Vermilionville tour. It still made for a unique Sunday afternoon, though.
This local farmer talked about growing his own food and the numerous benefits of eating and purchasing local foods. I believe the plants picture above grow broccoli. There were a few farmer's market vendors at the festival, and a few vendors selling handmade soaps, candles and greeting cards.
Lafayette Consolidated Government was there, showing plans on bike lanes and systems, and promoting the importance of the in-progress Lafayette Comprehensive Plan.
Vermilionville is one of those places that just about every local school child goes on a field trip. It's different to attend on your own as an adult, because you look at it through different eyes. What I loved about Sunday's trip was just getting to wander around this small replica Acadian village and immersing myself in the history of the Acadians.
The Acadians were a very resilient group of people, first moving to the area after being deported from Nova Scotia hundreds of years ago. They lived off the land down here and settled into their way of life. "Being green" can be such a hot debate these days, as many people don't open their eyes enough to see the reason for it. But in history, people didn't have to change their ways to be green - they simply already were. There were no other options. No plastic bags to waste; no cars to drive; no one-time packaging to throw away. They grew their own food, they raised their own animals for meat, they used everything over and over again. It was much more simplistic without all the modern day "convenience" (aka disposable) items.
This quick ferry ride takes passengers from one side of Vermilionville to the other, instead of taking the sidewalk back. And there is no fuel or energy used in its operations. The ferry is simply connected to each side of the swamp via ropes. Once you board the ferry, one person grabs the rope and pulls the whole thing to the other side, then you get off. It may have been a one-minute trip, but it was fun!
Pack and Paddle was also at the festival, and they had two canoes available for canoe rides around the swamp. My boyfriend and I decided to go for a spin, and we safely made it without falling in! Canoe and pirogue trips were common around here because of the abundance of waterways. You can't get much more eco friendly transportation than a simple boat with two oars. I even helped to paddle!
In the pavilion area, local bands were playing and food and drinks were being sold.
So even though the Earth Day festival aspect of the trip was kind of a bust, the Vermilionville trip was a lovely way to spend a spring Sunday afternoon. The scenery was extra green, thanks to the spring rains. You can't really fault nature for wanting to have a part in an Earth Day event, I suppose.
Milo also wanted to get in on the fun and wants to tell y'all hello!
