America Recycles Day 2017

Happy America Recycles Day! Every year on November 15, Keep America Beautiful puts the spotlight on the importance of recycling.

While it's important to reduce and reuse first, recycling is a better way to handle items that we already have.

There are thousands of local events planned across the country today and all month long, but even if you only take a few minutes out of your day, you can celebrate individually.

  • Take the pledge to recycle a particular product, maybe one you don't recycle now.

  • Recycle as much as you possibly can! Especially on November 15, make it the highest priority. If you collect your recycling inside, make sure to bring everything to your outside bin or community dumpster for pickup.
  • Bring any plastic shopping bags to a recycling collection point. Many local grocery stores have a bin for plastic bag recycling.
  • Grab some bags and get outside. Use your lunch break to go on a litter hunt and pick up and recycle as much as you can, or take a walk after work to clean up the neighborhood.
  • Take your children around the neighborhood to clean up litter, and teach them about the importance of recycling in the process! In the spirit of the day, make sure to recycle anything that can be recycled, from plastic bottles, to cans, to cardboard. Don't just throw all the litter into the trash can.
  • Offer to recycle for others - whether your office or neighbors. Offer to take any of their recyclable waste and put it out for pickup. At work, go around to everyone's desks and offer to collect any recyclable waste, or leave a special bin for them that you can pick up later.

  • Visit the America Recycles Day website and look for a recycling event in your area. There are 2,460 registered events across the country! This year, there are no organized events in Louisiana, but don't let it stop you from doing something on your own.
  • Share the message with everyone! Let your friends and family know about America Recycles Day and encourage them to participate too.

Fun Ways to Recycle Fabric and Old Clothing

Continuing with recycling posts in advance of America Recycles Day, today I'm sharing a few ways you can creatively recycle.

Clothing and fabric is not recyclable in the sense of dumping it in the recycling bin for pickup. But it's very easily reusable, repurposable and donate-able.

Earlier this year I shared my adventures in sewing by turning a scarf into an oversized tote bag. It was a fun way to pare down my ridiculous scarf obsession collection, while still enjoying the fabric's print.

So, when I came across an infographic created by Cotopaxi about repurposing fabric, I knew it would be something awesome to share. The Salt Lake City-based company produces backpacks and other outdoor gear from repurposed fabrics.

Repurposing different materials is such an important part of what we do at Cotopaxi; in fact, several of our bags are made completely from repurposed fabrics. They're pretty cool and since they're made from scrap materials, no two bags are alike!

To celebrate America Recycles Day, they're sharing easy ways to create a jean stuff sack out of an old pair of jeans, electronic device cases from any kind of fabric you have, and a t-shirt infinity scarf.

See the full infographic here, or click on the preview graphic below!

All of these are simple and inexpensive ways to reuse old clothing that's probably stuffed in the back of your closet!

What would you create with some old fabric?

Murrica Recycles!

Christmas. Taylor Hanson's birthday. America Recycles Day. Thanksgiving. Earth Day.

Maybe I'm a nerd who loves to celebrate holidays, and maybe America Recycles Day really is one of my top favorite holidays.

Would you really expect anything more?

This Sunday, November 15, is Keep America Beautiful's annual day to celebrate and do some recycling! It's easy to celebrate, whether you find and participate in a local event or do something on your own. Let's celebrate recyclable items and the items they can become in a new life!

  • Take the pledge to recycle a particular product, maybe one you don't recycle now. This year's focus is on recyclable bathroom products - a topic I wrote about earlier this year! Send those shampoo or lotion bottles on to a new life instead of to the landfill.
  • Recycle as much as you possibly can! Especially on November 15, make it the highest priority. If you collect your recycling inside, make sure to bring everything to your outside bin or community dumpster for pickup.
  • Grab some bags and get outside yourself or with your children or a group of friends. Go on a litter hunt and pick up and recycle as much as you can. This is also a great way to teach children what can be recycled.
There are tons across the country! However, as of today, there are only events in Eunice and New Roads.
  • Share the message with everyone! Let your friends and family know about America Recycles Day and encourage them to participate too.

november 15 is america recycles day!

Put down your trash and mark your calendars for this Saturday, November 15: America Recycles Day! In the same way I like to say I act as if every day were Earth Day, I also tend to act as if every day were America Recycles Day.

Organized by Keep America Beautiful in partnership with Waste Management, AMCOR, Johnson & Johnson, Northrop Grumman, Pilot and the American Chemistry Council, America Recycles Day aims to bring recycling education and action to the country in fun ways.

This year, America Recycles Day focuses on what can be recycled. With the national recycling rate slightly above 34 percent, Americans have the opportunity to capture more material for recycling by recycling correctly. Confusion about what can be recycled curbside is among the common barriers to recycling more.

Visit the America Recycles Day website to learn more and find local events.

Another fun way to get involved on a personal level is to enter the ARD #recyclingselfie contest. You've got 10 days left to enter the contest, simply by posting a recycling selfie on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Tumblr and tagging it with #recyclingselfie.

Visit IWantToBeRecycled.org to find your nearest recycling center, and learn the facts about what materials can be recycled and what they can become in their new lives.

happy america recycles day!

Hope you are all doing something today to participate in America Recycles Day! It's been a pretty active day over on Twitter, and you can follow it all with the #AmericaRecyclesDay hashtag.

And if you're anything like me, you've been hooked on Batkid saving Gotham City today. It's refreshing to see a positive news story and see the good that can happen when people come together. More of this, less hurting others, please.

Wishes do come true, and this world could, so much, be a better place if people were like the Make a Wish Foundation crew and volunteers and the residents of San Francisco, helping to make Miles' dream a reality for a day. I'm so inspired by all of this and want to make my world a better place and make myself a better person. Let's do this, okay!? Let's be superheroes for the planet and for others.

november 15: america recycles day

This Friday, November 15, is America Recycles Day. Organized by Keep America Beautiful, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day for community education and recycling collection events that encourage hundreds of thousands of people to recycle.

So how can you participate in America Recycles Day?

  • Make sure you recycle as much as you possibly can! You should be recycling every day, but especially today, make it the highest priority. If you collect your recycling inside, make sure to bring everything to your outside bin or community dumpster for pickup.
  • Offer to recycle for others - whether your office or neighbors. Offer to take any of their recyclable waste and put it out for pickup. At work, go around to everyone's desks and offer to collect any recyclable waste, or leave a special bin for them that you can pick up later.
  • Grab some bags and get outside yourself or with your children or a group of friends. Go on a litter hunt and recycle as much as you can. Instagram what you find to join the Litterati movement.
  • Visit the America Recycles Day website and look for a recycling event in your area. There are tons! However, there are none in Lafayette, and the nearest one is in Abbeville, where a proclamation was made this past Monday that Friday will be America Recycles Day in the town.
  • It may be too late for this year, but look into hosting an event. There are instructions on how to register your event, and it doesn't specify how long the process takes. But if it's too late for this year, start planning ahead for next year!
  • Take the America Recycles Day pledge! It's free and takes about 2 minutes. I signed this morning and pledge to recycle more unwanted mail. You can also take the pledge on behalf of your company, giving you an even bigger recycling footprint.
  • Share the message with everyone! Let your friends and family know about America Recycles Day and encourage them to participate too.
  • Participate in the America Recycles Day Thunderclap. Take a couple minutes to authorize Thunderclap to post a Tweet, Facebook status or Tumblr photo on your behalf. They will then post a message on every authorized account at the same time on Friday, like a social media flash mob!
  • Follow America Recycles Day on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to keep up with the activities.
It's easy to participate; now all you have to do is choose how you will. Join in and help to make this year's America Recycles Day the best one yet!

Man, this morning was one of those mornings where I woke up almost angry that it wasn't Saturday and I couldn't sleep in a little longer. At least it's only one more day away!

In local news for this week's link roundup:
