June 21 is known as the annual International Day of Yoga, a day I can fully get behind. If you're local to Lafayette, pick up a copy of this week's Times of Acadiana, or click here to read my column listing the local events happening in honor of International Day of Yoga.
Since last International Day of Yoga, I've learned a lot about and benefited from the mental and emotional benefits of a yoga practice in addition to the physical ones. I've gotten into a meditation practice as well. During the year, my yoga practice has seen progress on handstands, crane pose and tougher balances. I got some hang time in aerial yoga and some bucket list time in stand up paddleboard yoga. Over the past few months, I've taken a few steps back and gotten into a lighter yoga routine, including some at-home prenatal yoga sessions. It's strange to not have done a headstand or wheel pose in six months, but I suppooooose it's worth it! ;)
Last year's International Day of Yoga was very long, hard and sad day, and all I was up for was going outside to simply sit for a few minutes. It was a day of profound loss and a day we gained a guardian angel, but getting outside in the sunshine and meditating was something that I needed so deeply.
It's been quite a journey over the last year, but today for International Day of Yoga, I'm setting an intention to be simply grateful: Grateful for new blessings. Grateful for where I am today. So, so grateful for the baby girl we get to meet in a few short months.
Today, I feel uplifted. It's the first day of summer, and it's the beginning of my third trimester. Although it's a bittersweet anniversary, I can't help but smile. There's so much to be grateful for! Root to rise, indeed.
Do you plan to honor International Day of Yoga today?
