Mother's Day Gift Guide

Happy May, everyone! Today kicks off the annual National Bike Month, and we're only 12 days away from Mother's Day!

If you're still (or about to start) shopping for the special mothers in your life, look for eco-friendly or sustainable gifts. Shop online in the next few days to get great deals and delivery before the holiday, or shop local and support an independent business.

These are just a few of the many great eco-friendly Mother's Day gifts out there, so this may spark some inspiration for you.

1. Honey Potion Mask | Farmacy Beauty

I'm such a big fan of this mask treatment that I'm on my second jar. I wrote about Farmacy's Honey Potion mask in my pre-wedding skincare blog post, and it's definitely an item that moms would love to help combat the usual exhaustion.

Look for any kind of skincare or lotion that is free from harmful or harsh chemicals, and give Mom the gift of fresh, natural skincare.

2. 7-Free Vegan Nail Polish | Native Polish

An easy way for a mom to treat herself is with a fun new nail polish color, and I'm loving this Ponchatoula Strawberry shade from New Orleans-based Native Polish. All of their polishes are vegan and free of the seven harmful chemicals found in conventional polishes: formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, camphor, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), xylenes and parabens.

Or instead of gifting your mom with an item, give her a gift certificate for a service, like an hour at the spa, or a manicure/pedicure. A little pampering, a little me-time and a little beauty boost can be a great Mother's Day treat!

3. Organic Coconut Oil Skin Food | All Good via EarthHero

Another way to pamper Mom is with organic bath products, like this coconut oil that helps with dry skin (something I've been battling myself lately, even as the Louisiana humidity rises!) Help Mom feel like she's at a spa with a product similar to this.

Check out EarthHero's curated list of gift ideas for Mom, and don't forget to use the discount code ECOCAJUN to get 15% off your order!

4. Robe made of organic cotton | Pact Apparel

Although "lounging" might be a pipe dream for many moms, especially new moms, a comfy robe is probably an important item to have. This one is made of organic cotton in a fair-trade approved factory.

Look for other sustainable fabrics like modal, tencel, linen or organic silk for apparel gifts.

5. Local Art | Mattea's Hand

Talented local artists can be found in any city, and finding a unique art print or sculpture can give that art-loving mom an amazing gift.

You can also work with a local artist to commission a custom piece, which can end up being a truly sentimental gift. (Shoutout here to my friend Blake, who is making us a custom version of one of his prints for our nursery!)

6. Skirt Apron | Liz Alig

These adorable and unique aprons are made from recycled button down shirts. No two aprons made are just alike, giving you a one-of-a-kind edge in the kitchen! Additionally, Liz Alig helps to support women in Haiti by giving them employment opportunities.

One way to really make an impact in your Mother's Day gift is to choose an item that supports working women and mothers, especially artisans like these ladies. There are so many amazing fair-trade, ethical goods out there, from home decor items to clothing to bags. Check out soon-to-be mama Natalie's Brands to Love list at her site Sustainably Chic for plenty of inspiration.

7. Local Flowers | Blazing Star Farm

Sometimes, a bouquet of flowers makes the sweetest gift, and choosing local flowers makes it even better. Blazing Star Farm is a regular at the Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market, and they've been bringing flowers each Saturday morning. Hint: get there early if you plan to pick up flowers, because they do run out!

Find local florists or browse at a local grocery store and make your own arrangement!

8. Mama necklace | Mimosa Handcrafted

I saw this Mama necklace in Mimosa's booth at Festival International this past weekend, and seriously contemplated buying it for myself. I believe I also pointed it out to my husband as a future gift idea, wink wink. Based in Baton Rouge, all of Mimosa's pieces are handmade and help to support a small business.

There are so many amazingly talented local jewelers, and unique handmade jewelry is always a great gift for a mom in your life. Facebook, Instagram and Etsy are awesome places to find and follow these jewelers. My resources page has a list of independent businesses that may help provide some inspiration.

9. Hope Supply Box | Mi Esperanza

Mi Esperanza is a company that works to provide life sustaining change in the lives of women living near Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  For 15 years, they have elevated women and given them the tools and resources they need to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

This box is made by the Honduran artisan women and includes napkins, napkin rings and a bag of coffee. It's a sweet gift for the mom who loves to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Now, happy Mother's Day shopping!
