Photo Friday: Thinking Ahead for PARK(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is happening across the country and around the world on Friday, September 15, and Lafayette is getting in on the fun!

PARK(ing) day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public “PARK(ing)” spaces. A handful of Downtown Lafayette metered parking spaces will be transformed into interesting, vibrant public spaces.

ReCover Acadiana is organizing the event in partnership with Lafayette Consolidated Government, the Downtown Development Authority, Downtown Lafayette Unlimited, and the Downtown Lafayette Restaurant and Bar Association.

September 15 happens to be the kickoff for the Downtown Alive! fall series, so it's a great opportunity for you to leave the car at home and embrace the bike lanes along Congress and enjoy all of the PARK(ing) spaces while heading out to the free concert.

For everyone with a creative mind, the group is accepting applications on how to transform each parking space. If you have an idea on how to make an approximately 110-square-foot space more interesting—maybe a mini-park (a parklet), an art installation, a beautifying greenspace—visit the LCG website and download the application form.

Applications are due next Friday, August 25. All interested applicants should plan to attend a workshop on Monday, August 21 at Rosa Parks Transportation Center at 11:30 a.m.

At Downtown Alive! that evening, winning PARK(ing) spaces will be announced in several categories including People’s Choice and Best Overall Design.

For a little extra inspiration, here is Lafayette's premier PARK(ing) space, constructed in 2014 and still in use today! The space provides tables and chairs, and sometimes umbrellas and kitschy string lights. It's a great place to enjoy a little gelato or people watching, especially during Festival International.

There was also a parklet as part of the Better Block Bertrand in May 2014.

Hope you all have a great weekend, and if you're so inclined, apply for Lafayette's PARK(ing) Day event and help temporarily transform Downtown Lafayette into something even more unique than it already is!
