A Spring Saturday Trip to the Farmer's Market

Things I was expecting to get at the Farmer's Market this past Saturday:
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Lettuce
  • Kale chips

Thing I was not expecting to get at the Farmer's Market this past Saturday:
  • A diamond ring

This past Saturday was the first warm, sunny day in a week, so I was looking forward to venturing out to the farmer's market and walking around. My boyfriend kicked off the day early by seeing his parents off at the airport, while I got up early and did a little yoga at the house before getting ready to leave. When my boyfriend suggested we ride bikes to the market, I cheerfully agreed (because when am I NOT down for riding bikes somewhere!?), and off we rode.

Little did I know this gorgeous morning was going to turn into one that will be forever memorable. We shopped, I filled up my cloth bag with baked goods and produce, we checked out the plans for the The Park at the Horse Farm (I cannot WAIT to see the plans once they're implemented!), and we went for a walk around the property.

The Horse Farm is this amazing, 100-acre green space in the middle of Lafayette, and it's hosted the farmer's market for the past year or so. The market is only in the front area, but once you cross the bridge over the coulee, there's an expansive space to walk around and explore. Many people bring blankets and picnic out there, and under some of the massive oak trees are little wooden swings. It's very peaceful and unique.

We decided to swing for a little while and act like children, then walked to this more secluded oak tree. One which begged for me to climb it. And then chicken out of climbing higher.

I didn't realize at the time that the space under this oak tree would be a spot we would remember forever. After Phillip told me how he knew I was the one, the next thing I knew, he was pulling a box out of his jacket pocket and getting on one knee. In a blur and through the tears, of course I said yes!

I have always said I wanted a proposal that was special to us, and he knocked it out of the park. Pun maybe intended! For pretty much the entire length of our relationship, we have bonded on bike rides and made it one of our favorite things to do together. We both love Lafayette and the culture here, so the Farmer's Market was the perfect location. The weather totally cooperated. We both ended up wearing shirts from our vacation to San Francisco. On our way to 'our' tree, I spotted an empty 24-ounce Strawberita can in the grass and picked it up to bring to the trash can. It was sitting next to my shopping bag the whole time. (Seriously, who downs a Strawberita tall boy at 10:30 in the morning at the Horse Farm!?)

Since 1998, I've thought of March 14 as Taylor Hanson's birthday. Now, from 2015 forward, I'll remember it as the day Phillip and I got engaged. Of course I would now share one of the best days of my life with the birthday of one of my all-time favorite musicians! For the record, he did not plan that part.

So not only did I score local produce and handmade baked goods, I walked out with a locally sourced engagement ring! Everyone, welcome Phillip as the future Mr. Eco Cajun!

Now, holy crap, I have a wedding to plan! How sustainable can I make it??
